Anne and I have been searching for a sled to add to our decoration at the Salmon Lodge. After years of keeping our eyes peeled, we finally found a genuine Flexible Flyer on the "free" pile at a church rummage sale in Edmonds, Washington. Samuel Leeds Allen patented the Flexible Flyer in 1889 in Cinnaminson, New Jersey using local children and adults to test prototypes. Allen's company flourished by selling these speedy and yet controllable sleds at a time when others were still producing toboggans and gooseneck sleds.
Hello everyone,
This past fall we made a big addition to the Salmon Lodge, a sliding barn door in the loft area. The door closes off the hall leading to the upstairs queen bedroom, creating a second master suite. The door was custom manufactured by Crow River Creations in Georgia and then trucked to our full time home in Mill Creek, Washington. There we crafted the L-shaped oak header board and installed the hardware. We then hauled it by trailer to Bend. Cameron and his team at Manup Handyman Services helped with the install. Anne and Rick When planning a ski vacation in Bend, most visitors immediately think of Mt. Bachelor. However, there is an alternative. Hoodoo Ski area is located west of Sisters OR near Santiam Pass, about 45 miles from the Salmon Lodge. Hoodoo is priced competitively and is a great destination for families or beginners. Coming up on February 10 is Hoodoo’s Winter Carnival; it is a celebration of the fun and excitement of winter recreation in the Northwest. The day-long schedule of events includes an ax throwing booth, Frisbee golf, musical chairs, a three-legged obstacle race, a team tube race, a hula-hoop contest, a pie eating contest, a ski javelin throw, an archery contest, a Hoodoo employee snow sculpture contest and bingo.
As many of our readers know, Anne and I are passionate about kayaking, canoeing and river conservation. So were delighted when the City of Bend recently removed a small dam on the Deschutes River, replacing it with the Bend Whitewater Park. Located just downstream of the Old Mill District, the park offers three channels for the river to follow. The habitat channel is there to restore riparian life and is off-limits to human use. The passageway channel offers mild rapids and can be floated by most users. The whitewater channel includes a good-sized breaking wave and is a popular play site for kayakers and surfers. Even if you don't surf or kayak, I encourage you to head down to the park and watch the action. Located only a half a mile from the Salmon Lodge, you can walk there in 10 to 15 minutes!
I never get tired of exploring the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, located just 23 miles south of the Salmon Lodge off Highway 97. Newberry is enormous, ranking as the largest volcano in the Cascades and covering an area as large as Rhode Island. There is no end to the opportunities for outdoor adventure – hiking, canoeing and caving! If the weather is bad, an entire day can be spend in the visitor center there. And if you are into motorcycles (as I am), the drive up Highway 21 to the Paulina Lake area makes for a spectacular but safe twisty journey!
One of the great things about the Salmon Lodge is its proximity to the Les Schwab Amphitheater. Boasting a capacity of 8,000 attendees, this concert venue is located just across the Deschutes River, within easy walking distance from our lodge. The schedule for the summer of 2018 is already being filled in. Check it out:
