I never get tired of exploring the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, located just 23 miles south of the Salmon Lodge off Highway 97. Newberry is enormous, ranking as the largest volcano in the Cascades and covering an area as large as Rhode Island. There is no end to the opportunities for outdoor adventure – hiking, canoeing and caving! If the weather is bad, an entire day can be spend in the visitor center there. And if you are into motorcycles (as I am), the drive up Highway 21 to the Paulina Lake area makes for a spectacular but safe twisty journey!
One of the great things about the Salmon Lodge is its proximity to the Les Schwab Amphitheater. Boasting a capacity of 8,000 attendees, this concert venue is located just across the Deschutes River, within easy walking distance from our lodge. The schedule for the summer of 2018 is already being filled in. Check it out:
https://www.bendconcerts.com During our recent December trip, Anne and I visited one of our favorite Old Mill breweries, Immersion Brewing. Located at 550 SW Industrial Way, Immersion is only a 14-minute walk from the Salmon Lodge. Monday is the best day to go – Immersion dubs Mondays as “Locals’ Day” and prices pints at $3. I enjoy IPA, so I tried the Epic Bender imperial IPA. Delicious!
In December we heard from a guest that water had been leaking from a can light in the ceiling of the great room. Leaks are true emergencies, as left unaddressed, they can result in structural damage and mold. Luckily, we have a great handyman, Cameron Anderson of Manup Handyman Services. Just days prior to the first big snow of the season, he was able to rent a tall ladder and get up on the roof. He found a loose piece of flashing and caulked it in place. Problem solved! During my next visit in February, Cameron and I plan to construct a scaffolding to reach the ceiling of the great room, about 25 feet above floor level. He and I will pull the can light, inspect to confirm the attic space is dry and clean, and then paint the water stains on the ceiling. While we have the scaffolding in place, I will use this opportunity to replace the four highest fluorescent down-lights with retrofit LED inserts. These new replacements have an expected lifetime of 50,000 hours and use only 12W each. I will let you know how the project goes!
